New Jessica Hawkins release with 5 Star Review

Title: Something in the Way
Author: Jessica Hawkins
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: February 27, 2017

It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents’ house. Under the sweat and dirt, Manning Sutter was as handsome as the sun was bright. He was older, darker, experienced. I wore a smiley-face t-shirt and had never even been kissed. Yet we saw something in each other that would link us in ways that couldn’t be broken...no matter how hard we tried.

I loved Manning before I knew the meaning of the word. I was too young, he said. I would wait. Through all the carefully-chosen words hiding what we knew to be true, through his struggle to keep me innocent, and through infinitely-starry nights—I would wait. But I’d learn that life isn’t always fair. That no matter how much you achieve, none of it matters if you suffer the heartbreak that comes with falling for someone you can never have. Because even though I saw Manning first, that didn’t matter. My older sister saw him next.

Jessica Hawkins grew up between the purple mountains and under the endless sun of Palm Springs, California. She studied international business at Arizona State University and has also lived in Costa Rica and New York City. To her, the most intriguing fiction is forbidden, and that's what you'll find in her stories. Currently, she resides wherever her head lands, which is often the unexpected (but warm) keyboard of her trusty MacBook.

Can you think back to a time in your life where things were still innocent and questions were still thought out after you jumped feet first into life? Can you remember what it felt like to be young and being punched in the gut with feelings you couldn’t understand when you found yourself crushing on a boy for the first time? Imagine if that boy was actually 7 years older than you.

This is what happened to star student, the good daughter, the sister who has it easier, sweet Lake who is 16 when Manning the construction worker next door catches her eye. On a level bordering soul searching, Manning and Lake forge a relationship that starts off as a big brother/ little sis way but we can quickly see the transgression into something more. A something that Manning tries so hard to keep innocent but it takes every ounce of willpower he has to do so. A something that Lake nurtures from her naivety into a world of emotions that are foreign and way too grown up for her to comprehend.

Then comes Lake’s older sister, Tiffany. Fast paced in all avenues of her life, Tiffany just doesn’t measure up in her eyes and is still young enough to harbor resentment and love equally for her younger sister. But when Tiffany sees the sweaty, buff, brooding Manning on the work site, making him hers becomes a game for Tiffany to play. A game she feels necessary to win in order to gain some kind of attention from her dad. But ultimately may start to have actual feelings for Manning.

A love triangle that’s really not complete, Jessica Hawkins drops us readers off into the old world of the 1990’s were the forbidden, taboo thought of getting the older guy’s attention is exhilarating and the quest for acceptance is out of reach. Something in the Way is a romance, but it’s also a story that begins with 3 people and the choices they make and the consequences of those choices. While reading you will experience a full range of emotions from aggressions, to pity;  being intrigued with what’s going to happen next, empathizing with unspeakable hurt only to find yourself forgetting the details that make Something in the Way illicit and just feeling the emotions evoked at the end of each chapter.

Be careful while reading, you may find yourself screaming at your very own forgetfulness that this is only book 1 of this series that’s going to shake readers to their core. We have so much more to learn.
