Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄ƷRelease Day BlitzƸ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Lucky Penny by L.A. Cotton

Title: Lucky Penny
Author: L.A. Cotton
Genre: Contemporary Romance
 Release Date: November 30, 2015

I was his lucky Penny. He was my light in the dark, hope in despair. Our bond was one of survival, friendship... first love.

But then we were ripped apart and Blake Weston became the memory I turned to when everything else in my life fell apart.

Seven years later, a summer working at Camp Chance is supposed to be my fresh start. Beautiful scenery and the chance to better the lives of foster children--kids like me. But when my eyes land on him across the fire, time stands still and feelings come rushing back to the surface. I thought I'd moved on, tucked him away in my heart. One look into his soulful blue eyes and I know I'm wrong. Blake Weston can heal the broken parts of me. Restore my hope. Love me.

It's our second chance. A sign we are supposed to be together.

Isn't it?

I was twelve when I survived the accident that killed my parents. Fourteen when I survived the devil. And sixteen, when I survived a heartbreak of the worst kind.

But in my twenty-three years, Blake Weston might just be the first thing I won't survive.

Marissa didn’t follow me. It was most likely she had pieced together our story after Blake’s song. How could she not? It was as if he had weaved our entire relationship into his lyrics. I could feel his sixteen-year-old self singing every line to my sixteen-year-old self. Although, I was pretty certain the sixteen-year-old Blake I’d known then had no clue how to play the guitar.

After washing the tearstains from my face, I brushed my teeth. It was still early, but I couldn’t face going back out there, so I changed into my shorts and tank top and climbed into bed. Sleep would be impossible, but at least here, I was safe.

Most people felt lonely in solitude, but I welcomed the silence. I embraced it even. Something about the quiet, the knowledge no one else was around, comforted me. I knew it made me different. I didn’t need a shrink to tell me that, but it didn’t change the fact that I found sanctuary in being alone.

I lay there not really allowing myself to think. Thinking was dangerous; it led to remembering, and my memories were stained with pain and hurt and the kinds of things that made most people’s nightmares look like a walk in the park. Instead, I tracked the uneven cabin ceiling. My eyes followed the planes of the wood from one end to the other and back again until they grew heavy.

A knock on the door startled me sending my already restless heart into overdrive and I rubbed at my eyes.

“Hello?” I called out hoping to hear Marissa’s voice, but I knew it wasn’t her. She wouldn’t have knocked; she would have barged right in and demanded answers.

“Penny, it’s me.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, but my mind betrayed me as an image of Blake’s face filled my head.

Another knock.

“Penny.”

Forcing myself to sit up, I swung my legs over the edge of the bed. He wasn’t going away. Blake—our connection—was something I was going to have to deal with sooner or later, and from Blake’s admissions over the last few days, it seemed that he was making the decision for me.

My legs were like lead as I walked to the door. It swung open and Blake stood there looking at me with such reverence in his eyes I almost crumpled. Maybe I did crumple because, before my head had time to process what was happening, I was in Blake’s arms, and he was holding on to me like he needed me to breathe.

“I’ve missed you so much. I’ve tried to stay away, to give you space, but I can’t. I can’t spend another day feeling like you might slip through my fingers again.”

One of Blake’s hands buried itself in my hair and cradled my head holding me to him. My face pressed up against the collar of his hoodie, and I breathed him in. He smelled familiar, like damp grass and fresh air, of a time when things were less complicated, and my heart ached for us. At that moment, we weren’t two strangers reunited by chance; we were sixteen-year-old Blake and Penny.

And we needed each other to survive.

O-negative is Marie Aberdein’s favorite treat and she hates herself for it.
But she hates the MacLeod Vampire Hunters even more. They stole everything from her. Twice. The first time, on the night of the Battle of Culloden, the Hunter killed her husband and their child. Marie has survived the last two centuries hidden away with the man she calls Father, keeping their vow never to feed from humans. But the latest Hunter—the direct descendant of her husband’s murderer—doesn’t care about their good intentions. All he wants is for their ashes to blow away in the wind, so he tracks them down and burns the only family she has left. Payback is long overdue. Marie has escaped the MacLeods’ clutches and she intends to make this lease of life count. Merely digging her fangs into the Hunter won’t do. She’ll take everything he holds dear, starting with his heir, History undergrad and rugby-playing Gabriel. Once she has Gabriel in the palm of her hand, she’ll rip out the boy’s heart. And make his father watch. Only Gabe is more angel than demon. His heart is warm, his soul loyal. He makes Marie feel like the girl she has never had the chance to be. A girl who wants to laugh, flirt, and be kissed. But allowing their love to kindle will clash against the beliefs that make them who they are. When Gabriel becomes the next Hunter at twenty-one, Marie will be one of the creatures he is destined to slaughter. And loving him means giving up her vendetta against his father—something she won’t do. Sin and Sorrow is a New Adult paranormal romance set at St.Andrews University in modern-day Scotland.

First I must say that I absolutely love this cover, its sensual, dark and sexy. Very nice choice.

So I was most fortunate and had the opportunity to read this book prior to release. It is my first read from Marion and I truly enjoyed every detail of this story. This book would be like the equivalent of Outlander and Interview with a Vampire having a book baby. The setting of this novel is in the beautiful landscapes of Scotland and Marion wastes no time in immersing her reader into every finite and breathtaking detail that makes up the backdrop of this book. The descriptions are fluid, tangible and stunning and only enhances the story as it develops.

The story being that of vampire Marie and soon to be Hunter and blood enemy Gabriel. Marie has suffered long and terribly at the hands of the Hunters, at the hands of Gabriel's direct descendants and Father and she has vowed to exact revenge. Calculating and sneaking her way into Gabriel's life, she plans to weave a web around his heart and strike till there is nothing left but pain and eventual death; a punishment fit for the Hunter's who killed both her husband and her "Father". But what Marie doesn't expect is the very thing that she vows to destroy, Gabriel. He is gentle, kind, compassionate, caring and all the things that his family is not. He causes a change in Marie that will alter her course, he heals her broken heart.

I love the development of Marie in this book. She goes through such a roller-coaster of emotion that she truly grows and shines throughout this story. Marion's writing is so vivid that you can feel every emotion pouring from Marie's heart, you empathize with her confusion, revel in her love, and suffer in her pain. I also love that she is not a weak heroine, she is equally as strong as her counterpart and never plays the damsel in distress. She endures all that life has thrown at her and even when she thinks she has given up on happiness she is able to open her heart to it again with Gabriel's help. Gabriel is also a very easily swoon-worthy character. He is gorgeous, intelligent, defiant, protective and capable of some of the most compassionate gestures despite his stern exterior. I loved these two together as they offered a sort of harmony and balance that was missing in each of them.

This book is both a great love story and thrilling adventure in revenge and sacrifice. I loved Marion's vivid writing and chapter transitions. her characters were well developed and likable. I look forward to possibly more in this tale ;)

I’m dead.
I’m cold and alone and I’m dead. There’s no air in my lungs. My chest is as cold and hollow as a cave on a snow-capped mountain side. My heart no longer beats there. Frigid winds whistle through my ribs and the sadness inside me weeps like my favorite tree.
Days ago, I met with death face to face. The mirror, our meeting place. My two darkened green eyes stared deeply into hers. I tilted my head to the side. She did too.
“It’s time,” I whispered.
“It’s time,” she whispered.
And with that I turned away from her, the woman in the mirror who knew all of my secrets and all of my pain. I walked away from her and yet we’d never been closer than we were in that moment. The inner struggle was over. No more arguing with the woman in the mirror. No more arguing with myself. The choice was made. She was the victor. Or was I?
That was the day Riah Winter died.

So its now been almost 24 hours since I finished this book and I find myself still reeling from this story and trying to figure out how to put into coherent words what it made me feel.

Every now and then a reader comes across a book that reaches deep down into their soul, opens their eyes, breaks their heart, and takes their breath away. If a reader is really lucky they may come across more than one. I can think of maybe three books in my 33 years of life that have really impacted me in such a way that I feel it in my very bones. This book just joined that list a list that already includes another book by this same author.

When I first read Therapy by Kathryn, it blew my mind. It was emotional, raw and powerful. But Letters Written in White is something else, its a literary work of art. Its an emotional masterpiece that weaves its way into your soul, rips open your heart and lets you bleed out every single emotion you have ever felt in your life. Its a mirror reflecting what many people go through in this world, without concealment. There is nothing but pure unfiltered emotion emanating from the words and pages of this book. Its Riah's regrets and its your own. Its Riah's pain and its your own. Its Riah's fear and its your own. Its Riah's love and its your very own. Kathryn was right, you are Riah and Riah is you.

This book is about us, about people, about human beings in all their complexities. Its about living with an illness that is a silent killer, about suffering and about enduring in the face of immense tragedy. Its about learning to love yourself and having hope, and its about forgiveness in its most truest form.

I cried through this entire book and though my heart ached reading Riah's story at the end my soul was touched beyond any thing I'd ever expected. I don't know what Kathryn Perez has in store for us with her writing but I hope she never stops. I hope she never stops exposing the pain, I hope she never stops shattering literary boundaries, I hope she never stops expressing the beauty of both self love and the love of another, and I hope she never stops writing from her heart.
